Vitality Typeface

Original Typeface: Vitality

Type Designer

Vitality is an original typeface I created inspired by Amy Falkner – the current Interim Dean and Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Newhouse, and a valued member of Newhouse. We were asked to create a working typeface which captured the essence of a particular individual assigned to us. I had the pleasure of getting to know Amy Falkner as a unique individual with so much wisdom and optimism. Her vast life experiences and endless optimism carried her to where she is today as the strong woman she is – thus the name Vitality. She has worked every job in the communications field as both an analytical and creative person.

Vitality is just as dynamic as Amy Falkner with a high-contrast in height, stroke width, and terminal variations. Amy Falkner faces life with a receptive and open-mind. Vitality pays homage to such traits through the use of open counters and unattached strokes. Similar to its muse, who enjoys being lively whether in front of a class or at a soccer game with her family, Vitality is visual and energetic.

These original typefaces were put on display at a type exhibit put on by Newhouse for students enrolled in Typographic Design.

We had the opportunity to chose our favorite letter and create a 3D print for the exhibit to put on display. Paired with it is one of my original sketches when starting this project – showing just how much a piece changes throughout its journey.
